Gaps in the lattice: The surprising discovery of vacancy loops in FeCr

Dislocation loops are major sources of hardening in irradiated materials. In iron-chromium and related ferritic steels, the dislocation loops that comprise the majority of visible damage after irradiation are thought to be mostly interstitial-type. This is what has been reported previously, but here we will show that under some conditions, vacancy-loops make up the majority of the visible damage.
