Gatlinburg in the Fall Building upon the successful first meeting at Playa del Carmen, Mexico in December 2006, the second one at Crete, Greece in September 2008, the third one in Gramado near Porto Alegre, Brazil in October 2010, the fourth meeting in Padova, Italy in September 2011 and the fifth meeting in Hawaii in July 2012. The Sixth meeting will be held in Gatlinburg, Tennesee, USA between the 23rd and 25th of October 2013.

The focus of the 6th REM will be on the development and characterization of novel nanomaterials for energy science applications as well as the application of ion beam interactions with matter.

The 6th REM will be organized to honour Mark T. Robinson for his many and important contributions in the field of ion-solid interactions, in particular for his pioneering work in the development of the computer simulation code Marlowe and the role he played in the identification of the ion channelling phenomenon which has become so important in the field of ion beam analysis and ion implantation of materials. This accomplishment is still regarded by the US Department of Energy to be one of the 28 more important discoveries supported by the Office of Basic Research and is often held up as one of the first successful applications of computers in material science
